Terraced garden, Ilkley

An incredibly steep rockery (over 5 metres drop) and narrow, uneven steps traversing it, made the main garden below very inaccessible. The solution was to terrace the slope using new timber sleepers and to wrap a long flight of gentle steps around the terraces to provide safe access to the garden below.

The simple, contemporary style of the new terraces links with the house and existing deck.

The low planting on the terraces allows uninterrupted views down to the garden below and across to the other side of the valley.

The south facing terraces provide relatively warm and dry conditions for Mediterranean type plants including rosemary, junipers and cistus.
