Contemporary outdoor room to a period semi, Ilkley.

The clients had downsized significantly, moving from a large French country house and garden to a smaller period town house in central Ilkley with a flagged yard.  The south facing aspect and enclosed walled space however offered potential for a sunny outside room linked to the new airy kitchen dining/ family room with bi-fold doors leading into the garden space.

The clients were inspired by the detailing of a town garden of a London interior designer which used greys and whites to set off the greens and greys of the planting. They wanted to give the space a Mediterranean feel with the plant selection which included small olive trees, lavenders and aromatic plants.

The clients had a small budget to work with and were keen to recycle the existing old flags for the main paving. They also cleverly upcycled furniture to fit the space. The clapboard painted wall was an inexpensive solution to cover the back of the neighbour’s garage wall.

It was a priority that the outside space provided a useable play area for all year round for the two small children. An artificial grass lawn provided a dry play space for outside games and small slides.
