Sketch planting proposal for the new war memorial perennial bed.

Ilkley Riverside Park, new perennial planting beds.

We were approached by FOIRP Friends of Ilkley Riverside Parks for our voluntary assistance with the design and planting of Ilkley Park in 2020. Initially we provided a design master plan looking at the whole of the park so that FOIRP could take this to potential funders.

The first phase of new planting was to create a new bed around the war memorial. This is the proposed planting plan to create a swathe of Prairie style planting.

The next phase of planting will be the large embankment below New Brook Street either side of the stone entrance steps in autumn 2022.

Kind words from a local

“You’re doing a grand job. The new flower beds are beautiful. It’s wonderful how the park has improved and is so well looked after”

Many of the plants were given by a client of HTGD and the team worked hard in the winter to dig these out, pot them on for use in the park. By the summer of 2022 and the plants have established very well giving lots of flower interest and nectar for pollinators. The reaction from the users of the park has been wonderful – we had lots appreciative comments about how we have transformed the park.

A close up of the new bed in June 2022 showing the maturing and flourishing perennials. We included a visit to the park in our annual Garden Visit’s Day 2022.

An attractive combination of perennials – spire like acanthus, the crimson thistle, Cirsium and foreground dark purple leaves of Acatea simplex Black Negligee.

Rosa Tranquility, white marguerites, catmint and sedum have given a long flowering interest.
